Easy Activities to Teach So-Mi in Music

Posted on 02/27/202502/27/2025 by Mrs. V

These are some of the best and student-approved activities to teach so-mi, and they are easy to set up! These activities can range from individual paced to large groups. Adjust to suit your needs!

So-Mi Singing Game: Who has the penny?

This is a super fun full class circle game song. One student sits in the middle with their eyes closed while another student holds the penny. The student in the middles sings “Who has the penny?” using So-mi-mi-so-mi. The answer “I have the penny” echoes the melody of the question. The student answering is allowed to discuss their voice, but the so-mi’s must be able to be heard. This is a great way to assess solo singing as well as so-mi intervals.

So-Mi Melody Impostor

It’s like rhythm impostor, but solfege. See the intervals but also hear them played on a piano. If they don’t match, it’s an impostor! This is great for a time filler or a sub plan.

So-Mi Scavenger Hunt

An easy game to prep, hide the melodies and have students record the melodies after the search. Have your students perform them for you when they are finished. A fun game to include in your sub plan. After you hide, use one of the recording sheets to make a note of where each one is hidden. Click below to get your own copy.

So-Mi Book Series

There is an entire book collection based on a character named “So-Mi”. New characters are introduced as new intervals are introduced. Check out this read aloud!
