It’s almost the end of the year for most Canadian music teachers- we have one month left! This can be a stressful time as the kids are getting rowdy, the weather is continuously getting nicer, report cards are due soon, you need to finish assessments, oh, and you have to pack up your room, too. What you need, are some independent music activities that are on the quieter side as you prepare for the end of the year. Quiet Activity #1: Color-by-_________ Early years students love to color. Using different mediums are fun, using different pages and socializing all in one. Not to mention, it is also developing fine motor skills and reinforcing previous knowledge from music class. Coloring-by-rhythm and coloring-by-melody are very popular! You can easily create endless possibilities of what you want your students to color and how. It’s as easy as using shapes in a designer software. In saying that, it takes time, which is precious! Here are some already made for you! It comes with several different levels and it’s space-themed! Quiet Activity #2: Roll-a-Rhythm The volume of this game is easy to control. All you need is some dice, a pencil, and a way to play rhythms. You can use egg shakers, drums, other percussion instruments or just clap! Have the students roll the die and write the corresponding rhythm into the heart beat. Have the students play each rhythm with auxillary or body percussion! This set also comes with varying levels. Explore here! Quiet Activity #3: Onomatopoeia Hunt This activity can take your class anywhere. Grab a clipboard and a pencil then head outside. Have students locate the sounds listed on the hunt page. Have them check off or write in the thing that makes the sound (eg. “Stick” could be under “Crunch”). For upper elementary students, have them play the rhythm listed with the sound that they have found. Finally, have students find a bonus sound not mentioned on the list. Find these pages here. Quiet Activity #4: Melody or Rhythm Scavenger Hunt This game requires a little more prep but much like the onomatopoeia activity, this game can take place anywhere. For more information about how to set up, find this post or view the resources here. The end is near! These activities will see you to the end of the year. If you liked seeing all four of these quiet activities, you can find a resource bundle with all of them inside! Click the photo below.
