It has been a while since I published a post. . . I can’t believe how quickly winter break came and then left. The last week of school was concert chaos with setting our space up, tech rehearsals, props, students, all of the things and then having not one, not two, but TEN shows on the Tuesday and Wednesday. It was amazing! My students had such great performances! The next day was clean up and then the last day was party day and also researching for my new job for the new year!
I work the majority of my assignment at a K-3 immersion school. The music teacher at the 4-6 school is going on maternity leave. The school had found replacements for most of her job, but recruited another teacher from my school to teach French and then myself to fill in the holes where music exists. These means that grade 4 music is now my responsibility until June.
These grade four students are special because I had taught them all last year. When I showed up on Monday, I got so many hugs and tears! I am so excited to see what these students are capable of this year. Our very first activity was a scavenger hunt. I used this one.
I knew that some students are early finishers so I added another step. When all of their rhythms were found, they were to find a partner who was also finished. One student closed their eyes while another student clapped one of the rhythms. The student with closed eyes then had to figure out which found rhythm the other student clapped. They take turns and then find a new partner. This game was a BLAST!
I am excited to see what this new year has to offer. Here’s to 2024!
